Also, in 1993, legendary Madison Avenue art dealer and entrepreneur, Alex Acevedo of the Alexander Gallery in NYC, began to revive his interest in the art of Frazetta. He decided to hold a lavish exhibition and present the original art of Frazetta to the fine art world of New York City. Alex's interest in Frazetta caught fire and he began buying anything of quality he could lay his hands on. He produced a beautiful hard board book to accompany the exhibition's opening on Halloween, 1994. The show was top shelf all the way; Frazetta has never had a finer setting to showcase his talent. The crowd was in awe. Frank attended the opening along with his entire family and had a wonderful time. Frazetta's encounter with the public didn't stop there. In 1995 he and his wife traveled to the gargantuan San Diego Comic Convention. Frank was mobbed wherever he went and accorded celebrity status of the highest type. Dave Winiewicz and Joe Mannarino functioned as unofficial bodyguards for Frank throughout the weekend. Frank met a number of longtime fans such as Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell, Dave Stevens, Simon Bisley, William Stout, Mike Kaluta, Mark Schultz, the Brothers Hildebrandt, Sergio Aragones, and many, many others. Frank was awarded a lifetime Hall of Fame award during the show. The San Diego show led to a flood of private commissions and more business connections. He signed a contract with Clayburn Moore to produce a series of sculptures based on his oils. Clay's first effort, The Princess, was a huge success and continues to sell. Frank also did private commissions for Willam Tucci (a watercolor of SHI), Mike Allred (a pen/ink of Mad ), a Phantom pen/ink, a Pitt pen/ink, a cover for the Sly Stallone / Judge Dredd edition of MAD magazine and a fantastic calendar oil for Wizards of the Coast ( entitled Beauty and the Beast). Other projects included a new book, ICON that compiles some of his best work and a follow-up book, LEGACY, that collects many pieces never seen before. Frazetta is back in a big way ( of course, his real fans know he never left ). Frank Frazetta was presented with the first Spectrum Grand Master of Fantastic Art award in late 1995. When he returning from San Diego, Frank suffered a series of debilitating strokes. After each attack he made a comeback. It was another challenge to confront and to win. In 1996 - 1997 the museum was relocated to Boca Grande, Florida. A tropical island paradise on the gulf of Mexico. Although the museum was in the grandest of locations, it was literally inaccessible for the Frazetta fan to readily visit so they decided to relocate to the Frazetta estate. The new Spanish / Mexican style Frazetta Museum is, at this writing, in the final stages of production, and will be located on the Frazetta estate in East Stroudsburg, PA. |
